Proposal #3

Money tournaments vs trophy tournaments

Last season, in an effort to comply to the captain-mandated tournament cap, we had one singles trophy tournament, one blind-draw doubles money tournament, and one singles money tournament. The payouts were still quite large for the money tournaments, making them quite lucrative for the winners.

This season, Alan and I were approached with the idea of three money tournaments, with less payout for each tournament. We decided to do that, and as you know, the mid-season tournament had significantly lower prize money than past tournaments. The blind-draw doubles tournament this coming weekend will also have reduced payouts from last year's, and the end-of-season singles tournament will have the same payout scale as the mid-season singles tournament.

What we need to know is, which would you as captains prefer?

  • One singles trophy tournament with no cash prizes, one blind-draw doubles with a bigger payout, and one singles money tournament with a bigger payout. (Same format as last season)

  • Two singles money tournaments with smaller payouts than previous seasons, and one blind-draw tournament with a smaller payout. (Same format as this season).

  • Keep in mind that the payout cap was set at 3,000,000 won per season. Realistically, we can't increase that cap. The budget won't allow an increase.

    Thoughts or comments, anyone?

The league paid out 910,000 Won in the mid season tournament, and took 460,000 Won in fees, making it a 450,000 Won cost tournament. Higher pay outs arguably might attract more players to participate.
Having said that, we like to emphasize in many posts in this forum that the IPL is a fun league of amateurs who like to play pool, socialize, and spend a night (or afternoon) out. Why not get rid of money tournaments at all and leave them to the bars who like to do it anyway. The participants of a tournament are a small percentage of all active members of the league, and most members and some bars pay league dues to see them spent in tournaments?

Changing all tournaments to trophy tournaments would probably reduce the cost to somewhere below 150,000 Won per tournament. Some people like trophies (I'm one of them), others don't. Some do not treasure plastic trophies, but do treasure run pins. Wouldn't this be in the spirit of the league, and allow us to save more money for other needs such as the banquet?

Trophy only tournaments? is this about fun, or about a lack of fun(ding)

Do your really expect people to show up?

Why not solicit the bars to contribute money to have it at their bar. The league is in danger of dying a slow death. An issue I see is that, you have teams with like 15-20 players, yet paid the same amount of dues as another team that has 10 or 8. It’s no wonder you can’t afford prizes, let alone get them shipped here on time.

Could we move to a per person league dues model?

There are 372 players in the league or at least registered, that is enough to field 46, 8 person teams. Do we want to consider a draft?

If you had collected W35,000 won from everyone who joined the league you would have had w13,020,000. Currently, the league is charging about 24-25,000 per person in the league today if you divide up what the dues brings in. Here’s a chart that breaks out the per person cost models, although I feel 50 is a bit much, I think 30-35 is reasonable.

how much does the league need to produce a banquet, a website, support, tourney prizes, trophies and a banquet?

what is the league doing to solicit greater participation?

I suggest we look at some of the more successful policies or strategies that are in place in the Songtan league.

Sorry for the rant but, c'mon... let's not make it suck.

    Mark,
Out of 375 total players, only 225 players have actually played 5 or more matches this season. 13 of those played the bare minimum of 5 matches. Only 157 players have played in 10 or more matches. The most qualifiers that any one team has so far is 11. The average number of qualified players per team is 9. 350,000/9=38,000. I would guess that if we charged per player, we would be down to about 200 players maximum, and probably far fewer. Not many of the fringe players or beginners or what-the-hell-I'll-play players would be willing to fork over 30,000 - 35,000 for a few weeks of playing one or two games a week.
Also, you yourself stated earlier that you didn't want to play on a team with people you didn't particularly like. How would a draft ever work under those parameters? Same with a CAP system. Those league set-ups sound more like fun-sappers than a trophy-only tournament. The majority of the players come out to play pool with their friends. If there were a draft, we would probably lose 80% of our players.
    Not on my watch!

I'm just offering ideas (that's true, I don't really want a draft either) and by no means do I place the blame on you guys, I know you were left the consequences of previous decisions.
