no contact when the table is open was created by Peter Roxburgh
Rule question - If a player makes no contact with any ball when the table is open, is it a foul shot? One of the Loft Stix guys said I was wrong to award a free ball...

No contact with any ball is a foul, also when the table is open. All conditions must be met in rule 4.3 so the shot is not a foul:
4.3 No Rail after ContactIf no ball is pocketed on a shot, the cue ball must contact an object ball, and after that contact at least one ball (cue ball or any object ball) must be driven to a rail, or the shot is a foul.
4.3 No Rail after ContactIf no ball is pocketed on a shot, the cue ball must contact an object ball, and after that contact at least one ball (cue ball or any object ball) must be driven to a rail, or the shot is a foul.

I think someone on the other team was confusing eight-ball with nine-ball. :silly:There is a "push shot" in nine-ball after the break, where no contact is necessary. In, eight-ball there is no push shot. You always have to make contact with an object ball. So, you were right in awarding a ball-in-hand.
